Work

A number of masters emphasize the need for practice as a part of Zen training. There is a classic proverb, from Master Hyakujyo, which precisely translates the importance of work in the lives of Buddhist practitioners: “One day without work, one day without food.” When he stated these words, the master was 80 years and he worked every day. In the monastery, everybody must work and there is no hierarchy.

A day’s work includes the cleaning of the temples, cultivation of the land for subsistence, the preparation of the meals, the extraction of honey and the recovery and preservation of the forests.
